“Justin”, a veteran, has battled depression, anxiety and addiction his entire life. Unable to maintain personal relationships or hold down employment, Justin has floated in and out of jail, the hospital, and drug and alcohol treatment. Justin relies on food from the House of Hope that he cooks in his studio apartment provided by the Veteran’s Administration’s HUD housing program. Justin finds the chaplains and the counseling services helpful and one Monday, he sees his son, a high school student at Merritt Island Christian School volunteering at House of Hope.
Through the guidance and discipleship of House of Hope volunteers, the father and son have re-connected in a healthy environment. Justin and his son are beginning to establish a new relationship and often attend weekly men’s Bible Study together.

"Shawn" is the youngest of 4 boys to a single mom in Cocoa. His mother worked hard to keep her family afloat using all the resources in Brevard County she could find. Over the years, she has relied on Agape Women's Center for her pregnancies, and when money was tight, she relied on the food boxes for single moms from House of Hope. Shawn's mom was fearful that when Shawn was 15 and COVID closed all the schools, her struggling son was on a trajectory to drop out. When left with the choice to game and chat online with his friends or do all online school work, Shawn's inability to self-disciple left him failing his high school classes. Hearing about scholarship opportunities for private school funding, Shawn's mom set a meeting with Merritt Island Christian School, and Shawn tested into MICS. Shawn excelled in MICS's structured and safe Christian environment the following school year. When Shawn graduated, his mom beamed with pride telling everyone she could that he was the first in the family accepted to college and is moving to Indiana to attend Liberty University in the fall.
